"The garden that I have before me is typical of thousands of others, yet each time I watch at him I've been hit from his refinement. What would we do if we had a small yard and the means available to create a garden? First we will floods the space of geometry. Here a driveway, across a flowerbed, a bench or a fountain there, then vessels, pots, jars everywhere, until it is builded up every inch, every element regimented. Here, however, the architect and the engineer have spent so much energy and time to reach diametrically opposed purposes. At first glance it seems to find ourself in a forest glade, I mean, in one of those enchanted cloisters all light and sunshine that open in the short space of grass between the bushes and shrubs, in our tombolos Tyrrhenian coast and the Adriatic. Then you realize that there is the work of man, yes it is, but the ideal of the artist was to recreate nature with delicacy and simplicity, without being neither see nor remember. There are no straight lines, geometric shapes, or yes, there is a geometry intimate, infinitely subtle and non-Euclidean, a secret harmony for the mind, in spite of the mind immediately warned. Everything is irregular, the shape of the central green lawn is soft as the fur of a mysterious sea monster, the design of the blocks of granite plates lovingly taken from the bed of the mountain stream, smooth to the caresses of the waves along the millennia, the arrangement of azaleas, the jasmine, the gardenia, the bushes that rise slowly toward the pines and maples, to whom is entrusted the task of hiding the garden wall, the houses next door and frame of the sky. The harmony of the whole is immediately striking. Opera is humble, refined, civilized".

"Il giardino che ho dinnanzi a me è tipico di migliaia d'altri; eppure ogni volta che lo osservo resto colpito della sua raffinatezza. Da noi cosa faremmo se avessimo un cortiletto a disposizione e i mezzi per crearvi un giardino? Per prima cosa inonderemmo lo spazio di geometria. Qua un vialetto, là un'aiuola, laggiù una panchina od una fontanella, poi vasi, rivasi, stravasi dappertutto, fin quando ogni centimetro risultasse costruito, ogni elemento irregimentato. Qui invece l'architetto e l'ingegnere hanno speso altrettanta energia ed altrettanto tempo per raggiungere fini diametralmente opposti. A prima vista sembra di ritrovarsi nella radura di un bosco, che so io, in uno di quei fatati chiostri tutto luce e sole che s'aprono sul breve spazio d'erbe fra cespugli ed arbusti, nei tomboli delle nostre coste tirreniche ed adriatiche.
Poi ti accorgi che l'opera dell'uomo esiste, eccome, ma l'ideale dell'artista è stato quello di ricreare la natura con squisitezza e semplicità, senza farsi né vedere né ricordare. Non vi sono linee rette, geometrie; oppure sì, c'é una geometria intima, infinitamente non euclidea e sottile, un'armonia segreta che l'animo, a dispetto della mente avverte subito. Tutto è rregolare; la forma del praticello centrale verde è soffice come una pelliccia misteriosa di mostro marino, il disegno dei blocchi piatti di granito amorevolmente prelevati dal greto del torrente montano, lisci per carezze di flutti lungo i millenni, la disposizione delle azalee, dei gelsomini, delle gardenie, dei cespugli che salgono piano piano verso i pini e gli aceri ai quali è affidato il compito di nascondere il muretto di cinta, le case accanto e d'incorniciare il cielo.
L'armonia dell'insieme colpisce subito. E' opera umile, raffinata, civile".
